Description
Indication
Hydralazine is primarily used to treat high blood pressure (hypertension). It can be used alone or in combination with other medications. It is sometimes used to treat heart failure and high blood pressure during pregnancy.
Dosage
Hydralazine is typically taken by mouth, with or without food, as directed by your doctor. The usual dosage is 2 to 4 times daily. Your doctor may start you on a low dose and gradually increase it based on your response to the treatment.
Side Effects
Common side effects of hydralazine include:
- Headache
- Loss of appetite
- Nausea
- Vomiting
- Diarrhea
- Fast heart rate
Serious side effects can include:
- Chest pain or pressure
- Fast or pounding heartbeats
- Numbness or tingling in your hands or feet
- Lupus-like symptoms (joint pain, fever, swollen glands, muscle aches)
Precautions
Before taking hydralazine, inform your doctor if you have:
- Coronary artery disease
- Rheumatic heart disease affecting the mitral valve
- Kidney disease
- Systemic lupus erythematosus
- Angina (chest pain)
