  • Indication:
    • Gentamicin topical is primarily used for the treatment of skin infections, including conditions such as:
      • Impetigo contagiosa
      • Superficial folliculitis
      • Ecthyma, Furunculosis
      • Sycosis barbae
      • Pyoderma gangrenosum
    • It can also be used for secondary skin infections, such as:
      • Infectious eczematoid dermatitis
      • Pustular acne
      • Pustular psoriasis
      • Infected seborrheic dermatitis
      • Infected contact dermatitis (including poison ivy)
      • Infected excoriations
      • Bacterial superinfections of fungal or viral infections.
  • Side Effects:
    • Seek emergency medical help if you experience signs of an allergic reaction, such as hives, difficulty breathing, or swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat.
    • Call your doctor immediately if you notice signs of a new skin infection, including swelling, warmth, redness, or oozing.
    • Common side effects of gentamicin topical may include itching and skin redness.
  • Dosage:
    • Usual Adult Dose for Skin and Structure Infection:
      • Apply a small amount topically to lesions 3 to 4 times a day.
      • The cream or ointment should be applied gently.
      • The affected area may be covered with a gauze dressing if desired.
      • For the treatment of impetigo contagiosa, remove crusts before applying the drug to allow maximum contact between the antibiotic and the infection.
  • Precautions:
    • Do not use gentamicin topical if you are allergic to gentamicin.
    • Gentamicin is not approved for use in children younger than 1 year old.
    • Inform your doctor if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
    • Follow all directions on your prescription label and read all medication guides or instruction sheets.
    • Wash and thoroughly dry the infected skin before applying gentamicin topical.
    • Keep your hands and skin clean to avoid further infection.
    • Store at room temperature away from moisture and heat.
