Description
Xalatan is a prescription eye drop medication primarily used to treat glaucoma and ocular hypertension (increased pressure in the eye). The active ingredient in Xalatan is latanoprost.
How Xalatan Works:
Latanoprost works by increasing the outflow of fluid (aqueous humor) from the eye.
Key Uses:
Open-angle glaucoma: The most common form of glaucoma, where the eye’s drainage system is clogged, leading to increased pressure.
Ocular hypertension: High eye pressure without any signs of glaucoma, which can still cause optic nerve damage if left untreated.
How to Use:
Dosage: Typically, Xalatan is used once a day, usually in the evening, as it works best with this timing.
Administration: The drops are applied directly to the affected eye(s). It’s important to avoid touching the tip of the dropper to prevent contamination.
Storage: It should be stored in a cool place, and some forms of the medication may require refrigeration before opening. Once opened, it can be stored at room temperature.
Possible Side Effects:
Eye irritation: Stinging or burning upon application.
Changes in eye color: Latanoprost may cause a gradual darkening of the iris (the colored part of the eye), especially in people with lighter eye colors.
Eyelash changes: Thicker, darker, or longer eyelashes may develop in some individuals.
Important Considerations:
Avoid touching the dropper tip to your eye or any surface to prevent contamination.
If you wear contact lenses, remove them before using the drops and wait at least 15 minutes before reinserting them.
