Description

Xalacom is a combination eye drop medication used to treat glaucoma and ocular hypertension (increased pressure in the eye). It contains two active ingredients:

1. Latanoprost (0.005%) – A prostaglandin analog that helps lower intraocular pressure by increasing the outflow of fluid from the eye.

2. Timolol (0.5%) – A non-selective beta-blocker that reduces the production of fluid in the eye, further helping to decrease intraocular pressure.

How Xalacom Works:

The combination of latanoprost and timolol effectively reduces intraocular pressure, which is important for managing conditions like open-angle glaucoma and ocular hypertension. By lowering eye pressure, Xalacom helps prevent damage to the optic nerve and the associated risk of vision loss.

How to Use:

Dosage: Xalacom is typically used once a day, usually in the evening, as it works most effectively when taken at this time.

Administration: Apply one drop to the affected eye(s). It’s important to avoid touching the tip of the dropper to the eye or any surface to prevent contamination.

Storage: Store the bottle at room temperature, away from heat and light.

Possible Side Effects:

Eye irritation: Stinging, burning, or redness of the eyes may occur.

Changes in eye color: The latanoprost component can cause a gradual darkening of the iris (especially in people with lighter-colored eyes).

Eyelash changes: Thicker, longer, and darker eyelashes may develop.

Dry eyes or blurred vision.

Timolol-related side effects: Since timolol is a beta-blocker, it can sometimes affect heart rate, blood pressure, or cause fatigue, although this is rare with the eye drop form.

Important Considerations:

If you wear contact lenses, remove them before applying the drops and wait at least 15 minutes before reinserting them.

Avoid touching the dropper tip to your eye to keep the medication sterile.

If you have heart problems or other medical conditions that may be affected by timolol, consult your doctor before using this medication.

If you experience any severe side effects, or if the intraocular pressure does not decrease as expected, you should consult your healthcare provider.
