Description
Indication
Progesterone injection is used for:
- Treating uterine bleeding due to hormonal imbalance.
- Restoring normal menstrual periods in women who have stopped having them (amenorrhea).
Dosage
- For amenorrhea: 5 to 10 mg for six to eight consecutive days.
- For functional uterine bleeding: 5 to 10 mg daily for six doses.
Side Effects
Common side effects include:
- Pain and swelling at the injection site
- Breast tenderness
- Headache
- Weight gain or loss
- Acne
- Nausea
- Increased body or facial hair
- Loss of scalp hair
Serious side effects may include:
- Unusual vaginal bleeding or discharge
- Stopped menstrual periods
- Breast lumps
- Swelling of the ankles or feet
- Mental/mood changes (e.g., depression, nervousness)
- Dark patches on the skin or face
- Frequent or painful urination
- Dark urine
- Yellowing of the eyes or skin
Precautions
- Inform your doctor if you have allergies to progesterone or any other substances.
- Avoid using estrogens with progesterone to prevent heart disease or dementia, as this may increase the risk of heart attack, stroke, breast cancer, blood clots, or dementia.
- Regular breast exams and gynecology check-ups are recommended.
- Be cautious if you have a history of blood clots, liver disease, heart attack, stroke, or certain cancers.
