Description
Co-Aprovel is a combination medication used to treat high blood pressure (hypertension). It contains two active ingredients:
1. Irbesartan – An angiotensin II receptor blocker (ARB), which works by relaxing blood vessels, making it easier for the heart to pump blood.
2. Hydrochlorothiazide – A thiazide diuretic (water pill), which helps the body get rid of excess salt and water by increasing urine production, thus reducing blood volume and lowering blood pressure.
Uses of Co-Aprovel
Hypertension (High Blood Pressure): Co-Aprovel is primarily prescribed to manage high blood pressure, either alone or in combination with other antihypertensive medications.
Chronic Kidney Disease: It may also be used in certain cases to help protect the kidneys, especially in patients with hypertension and diabetes.
How It Works
Irbesartan blocks the action of angiotensin II, a substance in the body that causes blood vessels to constrict. By blocking this effect, irbesartan helps relax the blood vessels, lowering blood pressure.
Hydrochlorothiazide works by reducing the amount of sodium in the blood, which helps to reduce fluid retention and lower blood pressure.
Dosage
The typical starting dose is 150 mg of irbesartan and 12.5 mg of hydrochlorothiazide once daily. Depending on the individual’s response, the dose may be increased.
The maximum recommended dose is 300 mg of irbesartan and 25 mg of hydrochlorothiazide once daily.

Side Effects
Common side effects of Co-Aprovel may include:

Electrolyte Imbalances: The diuretic effect of hydrochlorothiazide can lead to electrolyte imbalances (e.g., low potassium or sodium levels), so regular blood tests may be required.
Dehydration: Co-Aprovel can cause dehydration, especially in hot weather or during heavy exercise.
Drug Interactions
