Description

Indication

The tetanus vaccine is indicated for:

• Routine immunization: To prevent tetanus in infants, children, adolescents, and adults.
• Wound management: To prevent tetanus in individuals with certain types of wounds, especially if they have not been vaccinated or their vaccination status is unknown.
• Pregnancy: To prevent maternal and neonatal tetanus by ensuring pregnant women are up to date on their tetanus immunization.

Dosage

• Infants and children: The primary series consists of five doses of DTaP (diphtheria, tetanus, and acellular pertussis) vaccine, given at 2, 4, 6, 15-18 months, and 4-6 years of age.
• Adolescents: A single dose of Tdap (tetanus, diphtheria, and acellular pertussis) vaccine at 11-12 years of age.
• Adults: A booster dose of Td (tetanus and diphtheria) or Tdap every 10 years. If an adult has never received Tdap, they should receive one dose of Tdap, followed by Td or Tdap for subsequent boosters.
• Wound management: A dose of Td or Tdap may be given if it has been more than 5 years since the last dose, depending on the type of wound.

Side Effects

Common side effects may include:

• Pain, redness, or swelling at the injection site
• Mild fever
• Headache
• Fatigue
• Nausea

Precautions

• Allergies: Do not receive the vaccine if you have had a severe allergic reaction to a previous dose or any component of the vaccine.
• Medical conditions: Inform your healthcare provider if you have a history of seizures, Guillain-Barré syndrome, or other nervous system problems.
• Pregnancy and breastfeeding: The vaccine is safe during pregnancy and is recommended to protect both the mother and the newborn from tetanus.
• Illness: If you are moderately or severely ill, it is advisable to wait until you recover before getting the vaccine.
