Description
Ceftazidime is a third-generation cephalosporin antibiotic. It works by inhibiting bacterial cell wall synthesis, making it effective against a wide range of gram-negative and gram-positive bacteria. It is particularly noted for its activity against Pseudomonas aeruginosa.
Indications:
Ceftazidime is used to treat the following infections:
1. Respiratory tract infections (e.g., pneumonia, bronchitis).
2. Skin and soft tissue infections.
3. Urinary tract infections (UTIs).
4. Bone and joint infections.
5. Abdominal infections, such as peritonitis.
6. Meningitis.
7. Septicemia (bloodstream infections).
8. Infections caused by Pseudomonas aeruginosa.
Dosage:
Adults:
Typical dose: 1–2 g every 8–12 hours by IV or IM.
Severe infections: 2 g every 8 hours.
Pseudomonas aeruginosa infections may require higher doses.
Children:
Dose varies by weight: 30–50 mg/kg every 8 hours.
Maximum dose: 6 g/day in severe infections.
Renal Impairment:
Dosage adjustments are necessary for patients with impaired kidney function (based on creatinine clearance)
Administration:
1. Reconstitution: The vial contains powder that must be mixed with sterile water (provided as an ampoule in the kit).
For IM: Mix with 3 mL sterile water.
For IV: Mix with 10 mL sterile water or compatible IV fluids.
2. Routes: Administer via intramuscular (IM) or intravenous (IV) injection or infusion.
Side Effects:
1. Common:
Nausea, diarrhea.
Pain at the injection site.
Rash or itching.
2. Serious:
Allergic reactions (e.g., anaphylaxis).
Superinfections (e.g., fungal overgrowth).
Blood disorders (e.g., thrombocytopenia, anemia).
Neurotoxicity (e.g., seizures in patients with renal impairment).
Contraindications:
1. Known allergy to ceftazidime or other cephalosporins.
2. Use cautiously in patients with a history of severe penicillin allergy (due to cross-reactivity risk).
Drug Interactions:
1. Aminoglycosides: Increased risk of nephrotoxicity.
2. Loop diuretics (e.g., furosemide): Increased nephrotoxicity risk.
3. Probenecid: May decrease renal clearance of ceftazidime.
Precautions:
1. Monitor renal function during therapy, especially in elderly patients or those with pre-existing kidney issues.
2. Watch for signs of an allergic reaction, particularly in patients with a history of penicillin allergy.
3. Use cautiously in pregnant or breastfeeding women (only if clearly needed).
