General Information: Albendazole is an anthelmintic or anti-worm medication. It is used to treat infections caused by worms such as pork tapeworm and dog tapeworm.
Medical Uses:
- Albendazole is effective in treating various intestinal parasite infections, including: Ascariasis, Pinworm infection, Hookworm infection, Trichuriasis, Strongyloidiasis, Taeniasis, Clonorchiasis, Opisthorchiasis, Cutaneous larva migrans, Giardiasis, Gnathostomiasis.
Dosage and Administration:
- The recommended dosage is 400mg taken with food.
- Tablets can be crushed or chewed if swallowing whole is difficult.
- Dosage may vary based on type of infection and weight especially in children.
Mechanism of Action:
- Albendazole works by inhibiting the uptake of glucose by the parasitic worms, which depletes their energy levels, leading to immobilization and eventual death of the parasite.
Side Effects:
- Common: Headache, nausea, vomiting, stomach pain, dizziness, temporary hair loss.
- Serious: seizure, fever, sore throat, severe headache
Precautions:
- May cause harm to an unborn baby; use effective birth control during treatment.

- Breastfeeding while on albendazole may note be safe.
