Description
Indications
Streptomycin is used to treat:
- Tuberculosis (often in combination with other drugs)
- Brucellosis
- Tularemia
- Plague
- Endocarditis
- Various urinary tract infections.
Dosage
Streptomycin is administered by injection, usually into a muscle. The dosage depends on the type of infection, the patient’s weight, and their medical condition.
For tuberculosis, it is typically given once a day for 1-2 months, then less frequently as directed by a doctor.
Side Effects
Common side effects include:
- Nausea and vomiting
- Dizziness
- Rash
- Fever
- Numbness or tingling in the face
- Hearing loss or ringing in the ears (ototoxicity)
- Kidney damage (Nephrotoxicity)
Precautions
- Inform your doctor of any allergies, especially to antibiotics.
- Use effective birth control to prevent pregnancy, as streptomycin can harm an unborn baby.
- Regular monitoring of kidney function and hearing is recommended during treatment.
