Description
Indications
Promethazine injection is used for:
- Preventing and treating nausea and vomiting related to surgery, motion sickness, and other conditions.
- Treating severe allergic reactions (anaphylaxis) and reactions to blood products.
- Providing sedation before and after surgery, during labor and for certain procedures.
Dosage
- Adults: Typically, 25 mg is injected deep into a muscle or slowly into a large vein. The dosage may be repeated every 4 hours as needed.
- Children: Dosage is based on weight and medical condition.
Side Effects
Common side effects include:
- Drowsiness
- Dizziness
- Constipation
- Blurred vision
- Dry mouth
Serious side effects can include:
- Severe breathing problems (especially in children under 2 years)
- Uncontrollable movements of the eyes, lips, tongue, face, arms, or legs
- Signs of infection (sore throat, fever, chills)
- Fainting
Precautions
- Children: Not recommended for children under 2 years due to the risk of severe breathing problems.
- Allergies: Inform your doctor if you have any allergies to promethazine or similar medications.
