Description
trypsin and chymotrypsin are proteolytic enzymes, meaning they help break down proteins into smaller peptides and amino acids. They are naturally produced in the pancreas and secreted into the small intestine during digestion.
Trypsin specifically cleaves peptide bonds at the carboxyl side of lysine and arginine amino acids.
Chymotrypsin cleaves peptide bonds at the carboxyl side of aromatic amino acids like tyrosine, tryptophan, and phenylalanine.
Therapeutic Use (Enzyme Supplementation)
In supplements or medications, trypsin and chymotrypsin are often used together for:
Reducing inflammation and swelling (post-surgery, trauma)
Speeding up wound healing
Managing conditions like arthritis, sinusitis, or sports injuries
Improving digestion (especially in people with pancreatic enzyme deficiencies)
For example:
Trypsin 25,000 units + Chymotrypsin 25,000 units
OR a combined total of 50,000 units from both enzymes.
These are considered high-potency doses and are usually prescription-based, especially when used for medical conditions.
Important Notes:
Should be taken on an empty stomach when used for anti-inflammatory effects (so the enzymes don’t get used up in digestion).
Taken with food if the goal is digestive aid.
Consult a doctor before using high-dose enzymes, especially if you have ulcers, bleeding disorders, or are on blood thinners.
