Description
Lodium is a brand of loperamide, an anti-diarrheal medication. It works by slowing down bowel movements, allowing the intestines to absorb more water, which results in firmer stools and reduced frequency of diarrhea.
Uses of Lodium (Loperamide)
1. Acute Diarrhea – Used for short-term diarrhea caused by infections, food poisoning, or dietary changes.
2. Chronic Diarrhea – Helps manage symptoms in conditions like Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) or Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD).
3. Traveler’s Diarrhea – Can be used when experiencing diarrhea due to contaminated food or water while traveling.
Dosage and Administration
Adults:
Acute diarrhea: 4 mg (2 capsules) initially, then 2 mg after each loose stool. Maximum: 8 mg per day.
Chronic diarrhea: Usually, 2–4 mg daily as prescribed by a doctor.
Children: Not recommended for children under 12 years unless directed by a doctor.
Elderly & Those with Liver Problems: Use with caution, as the drug is metabolized in the liver.
Precautions & Warnings
Do not use if you have:
Bloody stools or high fever (may indicate serious infection).
Severe dehydration (fluid replacement is necessary).
Colitis or bacterial infections like C. difficile.
Pregnancy & Breastfeeding: Consult a doctor before use.
Heart Risks: High doses can lead to serious heart rhythm problems (QT prolongation).
Side Effects
Common: Constipation, dizziness, nausea.
Serious (rare): Severe stomach pain, bloating, irregular heartbeat, fainting.
