Description
Indication
Letrozole is primarily used to treat hormone-receptor-positive breast cancer in postmenopausal women. It is often prescribed after other treatments, such as surgery or radiation, to help prevent the cancer from returning. It can also be used as first line treatment for advanced breasts cancer.
Dosage
The usual adult dose for breast cancer is:
- 2.5 mg orally once daily.
- The duration of therapy can vary. For adjuvant and extended adjuvant settings, the optimal duration is unknown, and therapy is typically discontinued at relapse. For advanced disease, treatment continues until tumor progression is evident.
Side Effects
Common side effects includes:
- Hot flashes
- Headache
- Dizziness
- Weakness
- Bone pain
- Muscle or joint pain
- Increased sweating
- Increased cholesterol levels
Serious side effects can include:
- Bone fractures
- Mental/mood changes (e.g., depression, anxiety)
- Swelling of arms/legs
- Blurred vision
- Persistent nausea/vomiting
- Unusual tiredness
- Dark urine
- Yellowing of eyes/skin
- Blood clots (e.g., heart attack, stroke)
Precautions
- Before taking letrozole inform your doctor if you have: Liver disease, Osteoporosis or low bone mineral density, High cholesterol, Heart disease, Kidney problems
- Do not use if you are pregnant or breastfeeding , as letrozole can harm the unborn baby and should not be used by women who are pregnant or may become pregnant.
- Avoid driving or operating machinery until you know how letrozole affects you as it may cause dizziness.
- Pregnant women should avoid handling the medication.
