Description

Itraconazole is an antifungal medication that belongs to the class of triazole antifungals. It works by inhibiting the enzyme lanosterol 14-alpha-demethylase, which is crucial for the synthesis of ergosterol, an essential component of fungal cell membranes. By disrupting this process, itraconazole prevents fungal growth and helps treat infections caused by various types of fungi.

Uses:

Itraconazole is used to treat a variety of fungal infections, including:

Aspergillosis (lung infections caused by Aspergillus species)

Blastomycosis (a fungal infection that affects the lungs and skin)

Candidiasis (oral, esophageal, or vaginal infections)

Histoplasmosis (a fungal infection affecting the lungs)

Onychomycosis (fungal nail infections)

Dermatophyte infections (skin, hair, or nails)

Sporotrichosis (caused by the fungus Sporothrix schenckii)

Dosage:

The typical adult dose of itraconazole for most infections is 100 mg once or twice a day, but this can vary depending on the infection being treated. The oral solution may be prescribed for some conditions, especially for patients with difficulty swallowing tablets.

For onychomycosis (nail infections), itraconazole is often taken in cycles:

200 mg per day for 12 weeks for toenail infections.

200 mg per day for 6 weeks for fingernail infections.

Administration:

Capsules: Should be taken with food to increase absorption.

Oral solution: Should be taken on an empty stomach for better absorption.

Tablets: Usually taken with food.

Side Effects:

Common side effects include:

Gastrointestinal issues (nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain)

Headache

Rash

Dizziness

Liver toxicity (rare but serious)

Precautions:

Liver disease: Caution is required for patients with liver problems, as itraconazole can affect liver function.

Heart conditions: It should be used with caution in patients with heart failure or other heart issues.

Drug interactions: Itraconazole can interact with several medications, including certain antidepressants, anticoagulants, and drugs used to treat HIV, so it’s important to inform the doctor about all other medications being taken.
