Description
Indications
Chloroquine phosphate is indicated for:
- Treatment of malaria: Effective against Plasmodium vivax, P. malariae, P. ovale, and susceptible strains of P. falciparum
- Treatment of extraintestinal amebiasis: A liver infection caused by protozoa
Dosage
The dosage of chloroquine phosphate varies based on the condition being treated:
- Malaria Treatment: Initial dose of 1 g (600 mg base), followed by 500 mg (300 mg base) after 6-8 hours, then 500 mg (300 mg base) at 24 and 48 hours after the initial dose.
- Amebiasis treatment: 1 g (600 mg base) daily for 2 days, followed by 500 mg (300 mg base) daily for 14-21 days.
Side Effects
Common side effects include:
- Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, stomach cramps
- Headache
- Changes in mood or behavior
- Hair loss or changes in hair/skin color.
Serious side effects may include:
- Seizures
- Severe muscle weakness
- Vision changes (e.g., blurred vision, trouble focusing)
- Heart problems (e.g fast or pounding heartbeats, dizziness)
Precautions
- Heart Conditions: Chloroquine can cause serious heart problems, especially if used with other medications that affect heart rhythm. It’s crucial to inform your doctor if you have any heart issues.
- Liver Disease: Use with caution in patients with liver disease or alcoholism, as chloroquine can affect liver function.
- Eye Health: Long-term use may cause irreversible damage to the retina of the eye. Regular eye exams are recommended if you are on prolonged treatment.
- Pregnancy and Breastfeeding: Consult a healthcare provider before use, as chloroquine can cross the placenta and is excreted in breast milk.
