- What is Celecoxib?
- Celecoxib is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID).
- It works by reducing hormones that cause inflammation and pain in the body.
- Celecoxib is used to treat pain or inflammation caused by various conditions, including:
- Arthritis
- Ankylosing spondylitis
- Menstrual pain
- Juvenile rheumatoid arthritis in children (at least 2 years old).
- Treatment of hereditary polyps in the colon.
- Migraine headaches with or without aura in adults.
- Warnings and Precautions:
- Celecoxib can increase the risk of fatal heart attack or stroke, even if you don’t have any risk factors.
- Avoid using this medicine just before or after heart bypass surgery.
- Celecoxib may also cause stomach or intestinal bleeding, which can be fatal.
- These conditions can occur without warning, especially in older adults.
- Do not take celecoxib if you already have bleeding in your stomach or intestines.
- If you are allergic to sulfa drugs or have a history of severe allergic reactions to aspirin or NSAIDs, avoid celecoxib.
- Inform your doctor if you have:
- A stomach ulcer or bleeding in your stomach or intestines
- Heart disease or high blood pressure
- Asthma
- Bleeding problems
- Liver or kidney disease
- If you smoke or drink alcohol
- Pregnant individuals should consult their doctor before taking celecoxib. Using NSAIDs during the last 20 weeks of pregnancy can cause serious heart or kidney problems in the unborn baby.
- Celecoxib may affect fertility in women; discuss this risk with your doctor.
- Breastfeeding: Consult your doctor about any risks associated with using celecoxib while breastfeeding.
- Do not give this medicine to a child without medical advice.
- Dosage:
- For osteoarthritis, the usual adult dose is 200 mg daily as a single dose or in 2 divided doses. It may increase up to 200 mg twice daily if needed (maximum: 400 mg daily).
- Use the lowest effective dose for the shortest possible duration.
- Elderly individuals weighing less than 50 kg should initiate at the lowest recommended dose.
